Elmwood is a neighborhood located in central Oak Cliff, in Dallas, TX, near Allen. The neighborhood surrounds a central Greenfield bordering the limestone Cedar Creek banks. Before its acquisition in 1924 for residential development, Elmwood was the Tennessee Farms dairy. Elmwood population is about 7,044.
Following its thirty years of development, several architectural designs can be witnessed in Elmwood. The designs include Tudor cottages that are known for its distinctive stone and brick exterior treatments and sometimes brick or wood cottages of the 1930s, stained glass windows, as well as various ranch-like homes constructed during the 1940s and 1950s using wood, brick or stone.
Downtown and Greenbelt Elmwood
Elmwood Parkway forms the bedrock of the neighborhood. The park comes after Cedar Creek to the northern end of the neighborhood, and then stretches to the southern side down Rugged Branch via the heart of Elmwood. Filled with full-grown vegetation and habitat for different species of wildlife and birds, the park comprises of open areas for sports and play facilities, being a prominent area for enjoying a walk during leisure, jogging, and walking dogs.
There is also a small commercial center in Elmwood just close to Edgefield Avenue. The business district features several tiny commercial structures of its kind, professional offices, various houses of worship, and a Masonic Hall. This venue was picked for shooting of parade series “Born on the Fourth of July” movie.
Elmwood has expansive greenbelt and parks and it is just 15 minutes away from southwest part of Downtown Dallas. Transport is convenient due to the presence of two DART rail stations and easy road access that connects the neighborhood to all the city amenities. However, the area experiences heavy traffic jam in the morning and dusk.
Some of the real estate that is on high demand in Elmwood includes the stately shingled houses designed by Bernad Maybeck, Greene and Greene and West Coast Arts & Crafts architects.
The main shopping center in Elmwood is College Avenue, which hosts several restaurants and shops.
